University Professor/Playwright/Musician

I am a little on the intense side, but I try not to take myself too seriously. When I need to vent, I do it through my writing and my music. I am generous and kind-hearted, which has occasionally got me into trouble, for I have tried to help people who don't want to be helped. I am artistic, and I love to surround myself with beautiful things--antique furniture, paintings, good food and wine. I love books, of course, and I love to sit quietly and read or contemplate the finer things. I love independent film and international cinema, and more than that I love to discuss the hidden meaning underlying everything. I am open, and perhaps I am too open. I do not lie, which means I will always tell someone what I think. In my old age, I have learned to be more diplomatic and to consider the feelings of others. I am certainly not average, but I am not impossible to live with. The right person will find me a joy.

Insights
When raising a family, how important is it that your kids learn to speak Turkish?
It is essential, assuming we would be living in Turkey.
Describe the perfect evening.
Dinner, the theatre or jazz club, drinks afterwards, endless conversation into the wee hours.
Do you believe in love at first sight?
No.
How many kids would you like to have?
Not more than one or two, so that they get the attention and love they so richly deserve.
If you could have one super power, what would it be and why?
I do have magical powers--I can think. I can also write, and with it I hope to make the world a better place.
What is the most important lesson that you've learned?
I began working in a cabinet shop, at the bottom in short. After two years, I entered university, and went on to get my doctorate. In the meantime, I played jazz professionally all over much of Canada and the United States, recording a number of records, one of which was nominated for a Juno Award. I built two houses as well. Two years ago, I worked as a CEP fellow in Central Asia, where I learned to speak Russian. I am proud of my work to promote democracy throughout the world, although I am critical of the United States and the Bush administration.
What do your friends like about you most?
My sense of humour, and that I am fearless. They cannot believe sometimes my courage in speaking the truth on everyone's mind when everyone is afraid to speak it. Most of all, they love my stories--and I am a story teller above all.
What do your friends tease you about the most?
That I am from the United States, and that I was born in Utah--which is a very backward place. But in truth, my friends are not the kind that tease.
What gets on your nerves?
Conservatives, liars, and conservative liars.
What is the most important thing in a relationship?
Honesty and trust.
What's the best age to get married?
30 to 35
What turns you off?
People who pretend to know when they don't. Narrow-minded people. Religious fanatics. Dogmatic feminists.
What turns you on?
People who know who they are, do not need to pretend, nor do they need to tell you their life story in the first five minutes of meeting them.
What do you hope to be doing five years from now?
Making a new life in Turkey with the woman of my dreams and our children in which every day is filled with love and mutual respect.
